Niigata Minamata disease : mercury poisoning (1965)

Niigata Minamata disease (新泻 水 俣 病, Minamata Niigata ) Is a neurological syndrome caused by severe mercury poisoning. Identical with the original symptoms of Minamata disease in Kumamoto Prefecture, Niigata Prefecture, the second outbreak was confirmed with the same name in 1965.

The disease is caused by severe mercury poisoning, the source of methyl mercury in industrial dispose of waste water from mercury-sulfate-catalyzed production of acetaldehyde in Showa Electric Company chemical factory in the village Kanose. These highly toxic compounds dumped untreated into the River Agano first so that accumulated in the food chain, contaminating fish that when eaten by locals cause symptoms of ataxia, numbness in hands and feet, muscle weakness, narrowing of vision and hearing damage and disrupt the ability of speak.


690 victims of the incidents, the most responsible in this incident is Shōwa Electrical Works.
